I always have trouble focusing while I meditate. When I close my eyes, my mind begins to jump from the clothes I leave in the washing machine to the ingredients I forget to buy in the grocery stores. Once it stars, it will take me a long time to recenter my attention. 

If you just begin your meditation practice, you may have the same experiences. And it’s totally normal. I used to beat myself up for easily getting distracted. But one thing I learned is that the more you fight it, the more these distractions are.

So now, instead of blaming myself, I embrace the fact that the thoughts come to me for a reason. I can mark them, observe them, and let them flow. That’s the first step – acceptance.

Secondly, I use meditation mantras to refocus. By repeating one or two quotes in my mind, I am able to calm my mind down and invite serenity to my practice.
