“You never raise your hand.” “You should speak up more.” “Go out and meet people!”
If you are an introvert like I am, you’ve probably heard the same things like I have.
We as introverts are often pushed to do what extroverts do best, socializing, joining the crowd, speaking their minds…All the things that introverts are not always ready to do.
If we back down from these challenges, we are shy, socially awkward and isolated.
We both know it’s not the case.
Introversion is about what consumes us and refuels us. It is not a flaw or a problem.
But is there any advantage to being an introvert? How can we innies benefit from our temperament?
Here are the introvert advantages and reasons to love yourself. Shrug your shoulders innies. You have what you need to conquer the scary world.
Why introversion is a gift: introvert advantages
You are a great observer
When introverts are not talking, they are watching. They make up the lack of words with focus and observation.
That’s why if you are in a group, you would often pick up hints that are unnoticed by extroverts. You pay close attention to micro-expressions and body language, which tell a lot more than words.
You are a deep thinker
Introverts are good at discovering patterns behind the scene.
According to Dr. Jennifer Kahnweiler, introverts take more time to understand ideas and process more thoughtfully. That’s why introverts are often great learners with higher grades than their extroverted peers.
Introverts are creative
Solitude breeds ideas. Introverts are more productive by themselves than working in a group. J.K.Rowling, who created the magical world of Harry Potter, is one of the creative introverts.
Because of their highly sensitive brain, they are able to feel and understand the hidden messages behind a song, a painting, and more. Combined with focus and compassion, introverts are born creators.
You are a soft-achiever
By soft, introverts are more likely to attain their goals in a non-aggressive way. They study behaviors, languages, and play to the advantage.
Just like Susan Cain mentioned in her book Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can’t Stop Talking, “Aggressive power beats you up; soft power wins you over.” Introverts may not always be aloud, but they are strategically resourceful.

You are persistent
Introverts don’t back down from difficulty. Many enjoy the process of solving riddles and handling seemingly impossible tasks.
Compared to extroverts, introverts are less reward-seeking. And thus, they are better at handling temptations and temporary setbacks. Given a project they are passionate about, and they will be ultra-devoted and less likely to give up half-way.
You have a tight social circle
Introverts are good listeners. They keep their social circle small and make sure everyone in it gets their full attention.

Introverts are not anti-social. They are selectively social.
More is not always better. Meaningful relationships are often built on one-on-one communication. And that’s what introverts are good at.

Born problem solver
Heat may forge, but it takes cool to clarify.
– Laurie Helgoe

In a culture where prompt actions are highly praised, we sometimes couldn’t see the big picture. That’s why we need introverts. They are not quick action-takers, but efficient problem solvers.
They may not be the ones to jump onto a problem immediately. But they have the power to take a step back and see the whole picture. They are more capable of locating the problem area and give solutions accordingly.
Introverts are great writers
If you can text, never call an introvert. They may not be comfortable with unprepared speech. That’s why it comes natural for them to think before speak and shine through well-structured sentences.
In the digital era, where email and texts are everywhere, this introvert advantage can be powerful in school and at work.
